#2: The Supreme Court

The History and Workings of the U.S. Supreme Court

─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───

The supreme court is made up of nine justices, appointed by the president. There have only been over a hundred Supreme Court justices in American history. I've learned justices stay on the Supreme Court as long as they would like to serve, but I underestimated how long it takes to cycle through each justice. This is one of the most challenging positions to bear in the world; being appointed to the Supreme Court is akin to being struck by lightning. Before every discussion, each justice shakes each other's hand as a sign of peace and respect. This is especially important during trials. It’s the most powerful judicial body on earth, so respect for one another is crucial.

The Supreme Court is meant to interpret the Constitution and keep the government in check. They see around 7,000 cases per year. Most are petitions for certiorari, but only around 100 are accepted. For perspective, the Supreme Court typically acquires 100 cases per week. They meet weekly to vote on which cases they want to take to the court, after separately reviewing a group of cases. By the time they are receiving the cases, they have already been through court. This gives them any facts they need to discuss which cases they will accept.

This video did make me change my attitude toward the court. I still believe the Supreme Court should have an age limit, but I no longer believe there should be a term limit. Hearing them express that the job becomes less overwhelming as you hold the position drives me to be more confident in the older justices. A court of 9 overwhelmed individuals cannot be good for sound decision-making. In my opinion, enforcing an age limit will prevent people from remaining in these positions who might begin feeling the cognitive outcomes of aging. This also allows for fresh ideas and perspectives to come into play by younger minds.

#1: My Top 5 Sources of News and Information

My Top 5 Sources of News and Information

୨୧・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・୨♡୧・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・୨୧

X/Twitter I use Twitter (X) to stay informed about global events because people quickly share news and updates there. I appreciate how X allows me to see a variety of opinions on different topics. However, since you only know what the authors choose to share, their posts might reflect biases other users aren't aware of.

It's important to read multiple viewpoints to develop a comprehensive viewpoint. Doing so helps you recognize your own biases and understand diverse perspectives from people with different backgrounds. In summary, I wouldn't recommend this source for reliable information. Instead, use it as a starting point to form your own opinion.https://x.com/?lang=en

The Wildlife Society As someone who loves wildlife and earth science, I follow news and information related to both. I like to get a lot of my news from "The Wildlife Society" regarding species updates, national parks, prominent conservationists, and current events. Even their ads are wildlife-related & informational. One of my favorite things about this website is that you can view both world news and regional news related to wildlife and conservation.

I recommend that anyone interested in what is happening in the conservation world, or appreciates animals, peek at the website and see what you can learn. By staying educated about the natural world and understanding the effects of human actions on other species, we can all contribute to more educated and effective conservation efforts. Knowledge and understanding is a strong tool for encouraging a connection with our environment.https://wildlife.org/news/

Associated Press News Honestly, I find the chaos of live news overwhelming. While I like to stay aware of global events, I prefer not to be flooded with constant updates. The Associated Press is a wonderful source because its news coverage is clear and easy to understand. They present information in a balanced manner, especially when it comes to politics and international news. I also appreciate the arrangement of their website, with organized categories at the top that make it easy to navigate and find the news I'm interested in. Whether you want photography, the 2024 election, wellness, science, or odd news, the Associated Press is a source I recommend.https://apnews.com/

Twitch Although it’s an entertainment platform, several Twitch streamers will address national and international news. Streamers such as Ludwig will start their streams off talking about things going on in the world and often have conversations with their live chat. Sometimes people will chat about things while playing games, but most can be found in the “Just Chatting” category. I can remember when Donald Trump’s assassination attempt happened, clips appeared of people stopping what they were doing and trying to figure out what was going on. This allows the viewer to hear and see different opinions live while forming their own. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys entertainment, because it is a streaming platform, and just wants to be aware of what's going on. This can let you hear different stories and pick and choose what you might want to research on your own. https://www.twitch.tv/

Youtube YouTube has given a platform to those who are passionate about creating and sharing content, including news. People such as Brett Cooper, Blaire White, and Hasan Piker are extreme examples of political YouTubers. But here's the problem: because anyone can post anything, it's hard to know what’s true and what’s not. Unlike traditional news sources that have checks and balances, YouTube doesn’t have the same kind of oversight. This can lead to misinformation or biased opinions being spread.

So, while YouTube gives people a voice, it also means viewers need to be extra careful about what they watch and make sure to check if the information is reliable. If you just want to hear facts about what might be happening around the world but want a comedic but digestible source for your news, look to YouTube! With more than 2.7 billion accounts in their database, you're bound to find someone who caters to you! https://www.youtube.com/
